Choosing How to Live

The idea that suffering is a purifier is common in Jewish thought. The Psalmist talked about being blessed the man whom God chastens 94:12, Job talks about happy the man whom God reproves 5:17, and Hebrews talks about the Lord disciplining him whom He loves 12:6. So if verse 1 of 1 Peter 4 is referring to suffering for sin and that suffering is severe enough … then indeed we are done with it. Call it lasting behavior modification. Now if the suffering is for being a Christian, then surely we are done at that point with the sins listed in verse 3.
