Job Description
for Child & Youth Worker – Intern

Job Category:  Children, Youth, and Outreach
Employment Type:  Full Time
(35 hours a week: Tuesday, and Thursday through Sunday)

Start and End Dates:  May 6 – June 28, 2024

Overview

Glencairn Church is looking for one youth and/or young adult to offer leadership and oversight to the children, youth, and administration ministries while also experiencing leadership development.

Responsibilities

Youth Ministry (10 hrs/wk)

  • plan, prepare, and lead youth ministries on Tuesday and Friday evenings
  • connect with youth and develop relationships
  • prepare and manage promotional communications for youth and parents

Vacation Bible Camp (8 hrs/wk)

  • lead the leadership team in developing the program and programming material
  • plan and organize camp for 100 children in the community for a week of fun and inspiring activities
  • plan logistics and setup for event, decorations, snacks and organizing groups

Children’s Ministry (5hrs/wk)

  • organize and teach children’s summer program on Sundays
  • work with other leaders/helpers to plan and run programs
  • organize snacks, games, crafts, setup and cleanup

Bridges (5hrs/wk)

  • participate in semi-monthly food and clothing bank for families in need
  • collect and sort food on shelves, and help with distribution

Missions Trip (4 hrs/wk)

  • organize and lead a group of youth and young adults to offer children’s camps in Toronto

Administration (3 hrs/wk)

  • attend weekly staff meeting 
  • participate in training and mentoring meetings
  • depending on interests and need, other tasks could be considered that would support different church ministries

Skills and Experience

Desired Experience and Skills:

  • Must embrace the Confession of Faith of the Mennonite Brethren Church
  • Experience working with children and youth in a ministry context
  • Experience working with diverse individuals and teams of volunteers
  • Experience in helping organize events
  • Willingness and open to learn

Compensation

Payment: Hourly wage (35 hours per week at $20/hour)

About the Canada Summer Jobs Program

This position is made possible by the Canada Summer Jobs program, which is “an initiative of the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy, which aims to provide flexible and holistic services to support all young Canadians develop the skills and gain paid work experience to successfully transition in the labour market. This program provides wage subsidies to employers from not-for-profit organizations, the public sector, and private sector organizations with 50 or fewer full-time employees, to create quality summer work experiences for young people aged 15 to 30 years.” The individual must be 15 to 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period and may be more than 30 years of age at the end of the employment period.

International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada. Youth awaiting a refugee status ruling, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, youth visa or work visa are ineligible. As the objective of the Canada Summer Jobs program is to support youth entering the Canadian labour market, the temporary nature of an international student’s time in Canada does not allow for a long-term connection to the labour market.
